New Orleans rapper, Dee-1 brings us something fresh with his latest project, God and Girls. From the title itself to the cover art- you’re in for an eclectic delight. God and Girls isn’t just the catchy title of the track and album itself. This project is truly about God and Girls. I love God and I’m a girl (yes a woman now, but you get the point). So yeah, I like it. Actually, I love it. I love how it celebrates women. Especially the women that mainstream media often ignores. Songs like the title track, “God and Girls”, “The One” (feat. Jonathan McReynolds) and “Ready for You” (feat. Denisia) shout out the good women out here. Dee-1 also gives a voice to the millennial single Christian and some of the interesting misadventures and challenges of dating as a single Christian on tracks like “It Ain’t Safe” and “Just Go” (feat. PJ Morton). Truly, Dee-1 provides commentary on life overall for a new generation of believers. "I Know God", “The Narrow Road” (feat. Christon Gray) and “People Don’t Want that Real” are just a few of the songs where you hear that.
This is something that’s easy to listen to. It has met the Tori Unscripted No Skip Gold Standard. Yes, that’s a real thing. At least it is to me. I definitely listened to this many times and I didn’t get tired of it. Dee-1 is a dope rapper. His execution is natural and just real chill. The overall vibe of this project is chill, but there are definitely some upbeat tunes as well. The collaborations are awesome! Of course, I especially love the collabs with two of my favorite artists, Jonathan McReynolds and PJ Morton. God and Girls is a smooth blend of hip-hop, r&b and neo soul. As a matter of fact, if it were coffee- it would be a house blend. That perfectly smooth and earthy medium roast. Where my coffee lovers at?
